Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be swept off your feet by a handsome British secret agent? Okay, maybe not everyone thinks about spies the way I do, but it sure is fun to create a spy with a British accent. That’s exactly what happened when Shane Warwick popped into my head. Shane, known as the Knight, was charming and cool—traits any good spy needs to have. I had to create a heroine who would match him in every way. Katherine Barton Atkins sure did that and more.

All fun aside, the seriousness of this story took hold of me, too. Katherine had been raised to always be a lady. Proper decorum and impeccable manners were a way of life for this Texas socialite. So it was very hard for her to grieve after her husband’s mysterious death. And it was equally hard for her to accept Shane’s protection and help. This theme seems a proper metaphor for how we sometimes push God away during times of pain and grief. It’s hard to reach out and ask for help when we think we have to put on a good front all the time.

I hope this story entertained you and gave you an adventure and I hope the lessons Shane and Katherine learned showed you that God is always willing to help. It doesn’t take a spy to tip us off on that. God is good all the time.
